CULTURE - FESTIVALS CELEBRATED IN THE RIVER ISLAND OF MAJULI
SHRI SHANKARADEVA'S DEATH ANNIVERSARY
This is a very important function for the Vaishnavites in the Majuli. This is celebrated for seven days. Various cultural activities and religious programmes are held to commemorate this occasion. An interesting aspect of the functions and festivals organized by the Saras is that almost all non-tribal villages in the neighbourhood irrespective caste and creed join the function either as participants or audience or as lay invitees. In either case, tithi of a guru is considered as a sacred festival where one is to contribute to the extent of one's ability and will. In that sense the Sattras act as an integrating force and as a common organization for all.
